An elderly couple, Godfrey Ssenyongo and his wife, residents of Matugga–Kigoogwa in Wakiso District, have been left homeless after unknown assailants allegedly attacked and destroyed their home during the night.
The couple said the attackers stormed their residence under cover of darkness, forcing them to flee for safety.
“They came at night and attacked our home, but we managed to escape and ran for our lives,” they said.
The victims claim that although they have long occupied the land, they later discovered that other individuals are attempting to forcefully take it over.
“We later realized there are people who want to grab this land from us,” they added.
They further allege that one of their grandchildren is involved in the dispute, saying he sided with a company claiming ownership of the land.
“Our own grandchild sided with the company and started bringing issues,” they said.
The couple also accuse the same group of mobilising people who allegedly desecrated graves of their relatives, claiming they no longer know where the remains were taken.
“They brought youth who even exhumed our dead relatives. We don’t know where they took them,” they said.
They further report ongoing threats, intimidation, and repeated legal challenges which they believe are aimed at forcing them off the land.
“They have been threatening us and filing cases just to frustrate us so we leave,” they added.
The situation reportedly escalated recently when a group attacked their home at night, vandalising property and rendering it uninhabitable.
The couple is now appealing for assistance, saying they need compensation to relocate and rebuild their lives elsewhere.
“We just want to be compensated so we can find another place to stay,” they pleaded.
They say they are currently stranded and uncertain about their future after losing their home.
Authorities had not yet issued an official statement on the incident by the time of publication.
